Elk Grove Village officials arrive in Bulgaria

Two Elk Grove Village officials have arrived in Pernik, Bulgaria, where they are meeting local leaders and attending a cultural festival after recently inking a friendship agreement.

Trustee Pat Feichter and Police Chief Chuck Walsh are visiting the second largest city in western Bulgaria Jan. 24-27 as the town hosts its annual Surva carnival, which features costumed performers who dance and perform rituals. Feichter and Walsh are also expected to visit with Pernik Mayor Vyara Tserovska and U.S. Ambassador Eric Rubin during the trip.

"We have been made to feel very welcome," Feichter wrote in an email.

Officials from Pernik, an industrial town once heavily-reliant on coal mining, toured Elk Grove last November to get ideas and advice as they develop a new industrial zone of their own. The friendship agreement could pave the way to a formal Sister Cities arrangement.
