Lake County sheriff's car struck by vehicle

A Lake County sheriff's police car was struck by a vehicle driving too fast on a snow-covered forest preserve road Sunday, officials said.

A sheriff's deputy was patrolling the Illinois Beach State Park just before 1 p.m. when a vehicle heading east lost control, Lake County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Chris Covelli said. The deputy, who was heading west, drove into a ditch to try avoiding a crash, but the squad car still was hit by the other vehicle.

Emergency crews responded, but nobody was taken to the hospital, Covelli said.

The driver of the vehicle heading east, a 34-year-old Rockford woman, was cited for driving too fast for conditions, he said. This was the fourth crash involving a squad car in 24 hours because of roadway conditions and drivers traveling too fast.

Zion police handled the investigation.
