Elgin man gets 2 years for dragging Streamwood man by car after failed drug deal

An Elgin man was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to a charge stemming from a failed drug deal Aug. 4 that left a Streamwood man with serious injuries after he was dragged by a car for about one-third of a mile.

Ryan Shelton, 23, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, according to court records, and received credit for 193 days he's spent in custody since his arrest last year.

Charges are still pending against Shelton's co-defendant, Terievis Norman, 23, of Rockford. He next appears in court Jan. 16.

Prosecutors said Shelton arranged to purchase marijuana from the Streamwood man. The defendants arrived at the home of the victim, who handed the drugs over to Shelton, who was sitting in the passenger's seat of a car driven by Norman, authorities said.

Shelton gave the man money for the drugs, but it wasn't the amount they agreed upon, prosecutors said in court last year. When the man tried to take back the marijuana, Norman drove away, authorities said.

Prosecutors said the man instinctively grabbed Shelton's shirt, was dragged, lost consciousness and fell to the ground. He suffered facial fractures, a spinal fracture and a shattered pelvis, and his feet were missing most of the skin, authorities said.
