New Arlington Heights police station opens Saturday

The Arlington Heights Police Department will officially move into its new downtown police station Saturday morning, officials announced Thursday.

All units of the department will begin operations at 200 E. Sigwalt St. as of 6:30 a.m. The department has been operating from a temporary headquarters at 1500 W. Shure Drive during construction of the two-level, 70,500-square-foot building at the village's municipal complex.

"We are very happy to be back home," said Crime Prevention Officer Brandi Romag.

Village officials dedicated the new $27.9 million headquarters Monday ahead of its planned public opening. The building replaced the former 38-year-old police building, which officials said was cramped, outdated and unable to meet current and future needs.

Discussions about a new station go back to the 1990s, but planning began in earnest after feasibility studies were completed in 2010 and 2015. Trustees approved a $35 million bond issue in 2016 to help fund the work, followed by approval of the project in 2017.
