Waukegan man accused of abusing child
A Waukegan man is accused of physically abusing a 4-year-old child and causing a head injury, police said Friday.
Johnathan Fair has been charged with aggravated battery to a child and is held in the Lake County jail on a $5 million bond. He will appear in court Jan. 9.
Waukegan police said they were dispatched to Vista Hospital at 11:30 p.m. Thursday for a report of a child with a head injury. Officers were initially told the child was injured in a fall in her apartment in the 1600 block of Sunset Avenue.
The child was taken to the hospital by her mother and Fair.
Based on the severity of the injuries, the Waukegan Police Criminal Investigations Division was called to investigate. Investigators believe the child did not fall but instead sustained the injuries as a result of physical abuse, authorities said in a news release.
Fair is identified as the boyfriend of the child's mother. Fair lived with the child and her mother. The child's mother was not home when the injury occurred.
The child is in critical condition at an area hospital, according to the news release.
