Suspect in battery of pregnant woman captured

A Lake County man wanted in connection with an assault on a pregnant woman was captured Tuesday in Zion, authorities said.

Giovanni M. Smith, 29, of the 400 block of 10th Street, North Chicago, was wanted on a $75,000 arrest warrant linked to charges of aggravated battery to a pregnant woman and domestic battery. The warrant was issued in September.

On Tuesday, the Lake County sheriff's warrants team developed information indicating Smith was at a residence on the 1800 block of Hebron Avenue in Zion. He was arrested there without incident and taken to the county jail, where he remains in custody. He's scheduled to appear in court Friday.

North Chicago police also are investigating a Dec. 5 incident in which Smith is suspected of being the driver of a vehicle that fled from police in the area of routes 41 and 137, authorities said.
