South Elgin police looking for man in connection to theft

South Elgin police are asking the public for help in identifying a man they say took money from a cash register at a Jewel-Osco grocery store.

Police responded to a call about 5:47 p.m. Tuesday about a theft at the store, 375 Randall Road, Sgt. Mike Doty said Wednesday morning.

Security video from the store shows a man waiting in line as if he were purchasing an item; when the cash register opened, he reached in and took some cash, Doty said.

The man is described as black, 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall, of medium build with black hair, brown eyes, and a beard.

He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, black jacket, blue shirt, blue jeans as he fled the store and got into a black station wagon believed to be a Volvo; the license plate number is not known, Doty said.

The vehicle was last seen heading toward Gyorr Avenue.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the South Elgin police investigations division at (847) 741-2151.
