Lincolnshire library publishes gift guide for book lovers

If you've got book lovers on your Christmas shopping list but aren't sure what to get them, the Vernon Area Public Library is ready to help.

The staff of the Lincolnshire library has compiled its first gift guide, with recommendations for readers of all ages and fans of many genres.

"We want people to think of asking the library whenever they need a book recommendation - even if they intend to buy the book instead of checking it out," library spokeswoman Catherine Savage said. "Whatever gets people reading is always good with us."

Categories include books for hopeless romantics, science-fiction and fantasy fans, history buffs, thrill seekers and foodies.

Suggestions for teens, middle-schoolers, younger readers and toddlers are included in the guide, too.

Each category has five books. Cover images, descriptions and author information is included for each tome.

The librarians for the adult and children's departments created lists of their favorites from the year and then whittled those titles down to five per category, Savage said.

Entries include:

• "Circe," a re-imagining of "The Odyssey" by Madeline Miller.

• "The Kiss Quotient," a romance by Helen Hoang.

• "The Woman in the Woods," a mystery by John Connolly.

• "These Truths: A History of the United States" by Jill Lepore.

• "Crush," a graphic novel for middle-schoolers by Svetlana Chmakova.

• "We Don't Eat Our Classmates," a book for young readers by Ryan T. Higgins.

The free guide is available online at vapld.info/giftguide. Printed copies are available at special displays and at the checkout desks at the library, 300 Olde Half Day Road.

Digital versions of the guide will be distributed via email and social media, too.

Vernon Area isn't the only Lake County library publishing a gift guide for patrons.

The Cook Memorial Public Library District, which has facilities in Libertyville and Vernon Hills, has produced its second annual guide for this holiday season. It can be found online at cooklib.org/holiday-gift-guide and at the two libraries.
