Elgin family displaced by fire

An Elgin family was displaced after a fire on Saturday, but no one was injured, authorities said.

Firefighters were called at 12:01 p.m. to the home on the 800 block of Buckeye Street and arrived within three minutes to find smoke coming from roof vents, according to the Elgin Fire Department.

They met with neighbors who said no one was home at the time, but there were pets inside. Several pets were rescued from the home and treated at the scene with oxygen, Elgin fire officials said.

The fire was extinguished in less than five minutes. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries, but smoke and fire damage left the home uninhabitable.

Elgin Fire Chief David Schmidt thanked alert neighbors for recognizing the potential fire and reacting quickly by calling 9-1-1.
