Lake Zurich High locked down, student in custody after weapon threat

A Lake Zurich High School student is in police custody after officials learned the student intended to bring a weapon to school, authorities said Friday.

Lake Zurich Deputy Police Chief David Anderson said no weapon was found but possible criminal charges against the student are pending and under review by the Lake County state's attorney's office. He added the situation remains under investigation.

Anderson said a high school resource officer received a tip about 8 a.m. that a juvenile student had brought a weapon to school. Anderson declined to release the student's age.

High school administrators were notified, Anderson said. The school resource officer and school administrators decided to lock down the building when it was unknown whether that student had already arrived at school.

Administrators and the resource officer located the student, took him into custody, and brought him to the office. The lockdown was lifted at 8:04 a.m., Anderson said.

In an email to parents, principal Robert Vossel said administrators determined quickly the student did not possess a weapon, and that there was no immediate threat.

"Situations such as this can cause stress for students and adults alike," Vossel said in the email. "Should your student need additional support, we encourage students to contact our counseling office."
