Police: St. Charles man pistol-whipped couple in Elgin apartment

A 41-year-old St. Charles man is charged with entering an Elgin apartment early Saturday and beating a woman and a man with a gun, causing a shot to be fired.

Joshua B. Bibbins, of the 1400 block of Indiana Street, faces felony charges of armed habitual criminal, armed violence, armed violence in which a firearm was discharged and two counts of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, according to Elgin police and Kane County court records.

The most severe charge of armed habitual criminal carries a punishment of six to 30 years in prison for Bibbins because he had at least two previous convictions of felonies rated Class 3 or higher, records show.

According to an Elgin police report obtained via the Freedom of Information Act, Bibbins entered an apartment on the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, armed with a .40 caliber handgun and pistol-whipped a woman in her bedroom.

A man who was renting the apartment confronted Bibbins in the living room and Bibbins struck him with the gun, causing a shot to be fired, police said. Bibbins fled and was arrested a short time later near another nearby apartment building by officers who responded to the attack. A gun with a spent shell casing in it was recovered from near where Bibbins was arrested, police said.

The victims were treated at a hospital and identified Bibbins as their attacker; no one was hit by the shot, police said.

Bibbins is held at the Kane County jail on $250,000 bail, meaning he must post $25,000 to be released while the charges are pending. He is next due in court Friday.

According to court records and police, Bibbins has felony convictions from methamphetamine possession in 2000 in Winnebago County, and delivery of a controlled substance in 2004 in Kane County.

In April 2014, court records show Bibbins was caught with 14.2 grams of cocaine in Elgin within 1,000 feet of a park and sentenced to eight years in prison of which he served half, according to state law.
