St. Charles man charged with exploiting elderly couple

A St. Charles man been charged with stealing up to $10,000 from two elderly people he knew in 2016, according to Kane County court records.

William J. Petrocelli Jr., 55, of the 200 block of Fairhaven Drive, is charged with two counts of financial exploitation of an elderly person of $300 to up to $5,000. The felony charge carries a punishment of two to five years in prison if convicted; probation also is an option.

According to Kane County court records, Petrocelli, "while standing in a position of trust and confidence" with the two victims, "knowingly and by deception" obtained control over their bank accounts and took up to $5,000 from each victim on Sept. 3, 2016.

A warrant was issued early this week and Petrocelli was arrested Thursday, records show.

St. Charles police said they did not have anyone available to answer inquiries regarding Petrocelli's case and said a Freedom of Information Act request had to be filed.

The Daily Herald submitted a FOIA request seeking information Friday; the department did not immediately respond and has five days to answer.

Bond for Petrocelli, who does not have any previous criminal arrests in Kane County, was set at $1,000. But a judge let him out of jail on his own recognizance.

Petrocelli is next due in court on Dec. 6.
