The Lake County Board's 18th District has switched to Democrat as a battle between two Vernon Hills residents ended with Julie Simpson defeating Karimar "Kari" Brown.

With all 22 precincts and early voting ballots reporting late Tuesday, unofficial results showed Simpson, a Hawthorn Elementary District 73 school board member, beat Brown, 6,708 to 5,467.

The seat had been held by Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor, who is on indefinite leave from the board and did not seek re-election.

Brown was appointed in September to fill a vacancy on the Vernon Hills village board.
