Green Oaks tax hike for roads appears to squeak by

Motorists in Green Oaks apparently can look forward to smoother travel through town as voters narrowly approved a measure to raise funds to repair local roads.

With all five precincts reporting, unofficial results showed 951 voters in favor of a measure to create the village's first municipal property tax with 934 against.

Voters defeated two previous requests in 2016. Village officials decided to try again as available revenue sources, including fees from vehicle stickers, did not keep pace with work that needed to be done.

If the totals hold, the owner of a home with a market value of $500,000 will pay about $155 per year. The funding will be used to borrow for a comprehensive repair program.

The village is responsible for 27.5 miles of local roads.
