Harper College to host Latino Summit Nov. 16

The 18th Annual Latino Summit - which connects Northwest suburban Latino/Hispanic high school students with Latino college students and business professionals - is set for Friday, Nov. 16, at Harper Community College in Palatine.

The summit was initiated 18 years ago by Claudia Rueda-Alvarez, a Maine West High School assistant principal, and Juanita Bassler from Harper College, for the purpose of inspiring Latino high school freshmen and sophomores to continue with their education by exposing them to Latino college students and professionals in a variety of fields.

Students from five school districts and 17 individual high schools will participate this year.

Summit organizers said Latino youth are twice as likely as any other ethnic group to drop out of high school.
