Lake Zurich police, DEA host drug take-back event Saturday

The Lake Zurich Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs during a take-back event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.

Pills can be dropped off for disposal at Mariano's Fresh Market, 1350 E. Route 22 in Lake Zurich. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last spring Americans turned in 475 tons (949,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at more than 5,800 sites operated by the DEA and more 4,600 of its state and local law enforcement partners.

Authorities say the initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue, as medicines that languish in homes are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.
