District 21 awarded federal grant for anti-violence training

Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 has been awarded $124,650 in grant funds over three years from the Department of Justice to provide training and support to the staff to identify, respond to and prevent threats of harm and violence, officials said.

The money will be used for two programs: Safe and Civil Schools training, to design schoolwide discipline plans that address discipline policies and procedures, climate and culture, safety, student-staff interactions, motivation and engagement; and trauma-informed training that focuses on social-emotional learning, resilience, restorative practices and executive functioning.

Under the STOP School Violence Act, units of government across the country were invited to apply for a share of $50 million in funding.
