Maine East High School student arrested over Snapchat post

Park Ridge police have arrested a Maine East High School student accused of posing on social media with what appeared to be a handgun, according to reports.

Mustafa Obaid, 18, who lives in an unincorporated area near Des Plaines, was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor disorderly conduct stemming from allegations that he posed with an air-soft replica gun on Snapchat. ABC 7 reported that Obaid is a student at Maine East High School in Park Ridge.

Parents who were concerned about the post alerted Park Ridge police Tuesday night, according to a news release. Officers responded to the 8800 block of Dee Road and arrested Obaid about 1 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

Officers reported finding a black air-soft replica gun in Obaid's vehicle, which they said they confirmed to be the weapon displayed in the Snapchat post.

"The swift success in locating and arresting Obaid is due to the timely information provided by numerous concerned teens and adults, as well as the cooperation between the Park Ridge Police Department and the Cook County Sheriff's Police," Park Ridge police said in the news release.

Obaid's next scheduled court appearance is Nov. 30.
