Woman in wheelchair survived being struck by Metra train in Hinsdale

A woman who uses a wheelchair was struck by a Metra train near the West Hinsdale station Tuesday afternoon and survived, according to Metra officials.

The woman, who has not been identified, was struck at around 5 p.m. and was rushed to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Metra spokeswoman Sylvia Cooper said.

Cooper said she did not know the woman's condition but had heard as recently as 8:15 p.m. that the woman was alive.

The Stough St. Railroad Crossing at Hinsdale Ave and Burlington Ave was closed after the crash, according to a post made on the Hinsdale Police Department's Facebook page. The crossing was reopened at around 7 p.m.

The Hinsdale Police Department did not return requests for comment Tuesday evening.

Cooper said train traffic was slowed greatly in both directions following the crash and inbound train traffic was even stopped for more than an hour.
