Police: Man shot to death during robbery at Lindenhurst house

One person was shot dead Tuesday in a Lindenhurst home during an early morning robbery, authorities said.

The violent confrontation happened about 2:30 a.m. at a house on the 300 block of Teal Road.

Sgt. Christopher Covelli, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force spokesman, said two men - Evanston resident Michael J. Zachery and a 34-year-old Chicago man who has not yet been identified by police - contacted the Lindenhurst resident and told him they were interested in buying a gun he was selling. But the pair instead attempted to rob the Lindenhurst man after they arrived early in the morning, Covelli said.

Covelli said the Lindenhurst man was attacked with a hammer, and during the beating he shot the Chicago man, who later died.

Another resident of the home woke during the commotion and subdued Zachery until police arrived, Covelli said.

Zachery was charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery. Covelli said Zachery was charged with murder because his Chicago accomplice's death was a result of a crime Zachery was committing.

The Lindenhurst resident who was beaten with a hammer was taken to a hospital and later was released.

Covelli said police are investigating if the gun sale was legal.
