Authorities: Woman intentionally ran over man she had relationship with

A Waukegan woman faces a first-degree murder charge after she used her car to intentionally run over a man she had a long-term relationship with, authorities said Monday.

Alfie Abston, 39, is held in Lake County jail on $3 million bail for killing Mark Bernard, 41, of Waukegan, authorities said.

A verbal altercation between Abston and Bernard escalated just before 5:30 a.m. Friday at Washington and Genesee streets in downtown Waukegan, resulting in Abston striking Bernard with her 2007 sedan, authorities said. After running over Bernard, Abston left the scene, authorities said.

Officers were called to the intersection and found Bernard in the street. He was transported to the hospital by the Waukegan Fire Department, where he died, authorities said.

The vehicle used in the fatal hit and run has been recovered, authorities said. Police classified the case as "domestically charged," and said the relationship between Abston and Bernard was "long term."

Her next court date is Nov. 1, authorities said.
