12-year sentence for Palatine teen who shot victim in the face

A Palatine teen who shot another teen in the face in a 2017 case of mistaken identity was sentenced to 12 years in prison Wednesday.

Giovanny Unzueta, 18, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm in exchange for the sentence, court records show.

Police said Unzueta fired at the victim about 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7, 2017, from a car in a parking lot outside a big-box store on the 1400 block of Rand Road in Palatine.

Unzueta, who police say is a known gang member, reportedly shouted gang slurs after the shooting.

The victim, who police say was not affiliated with a gang, was released from the hospital with bone and bullet fragments embedded in his jaw, which required doctors to implant a metal plate in his face.

Unzueta received credit for 696 days in custody, records show.

He must complete at least 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
