Schaumburg man charged with DUI in crash that killed pregnant mother of four

A Schaumburg man who prosecutors say previously received court supervision in a DUI case was driving drunk Monday when his pickup truck struck and killed a 12 weeks pregnant mother of four in Streamwood, authorities said Wednesday.

Hinigo Olvera, 67, of the 100 Block of Barrett Lane, was ordered held on $1 million bail after a hearing Wednesday on a charge of aggravated driving under the influence stemming from the deadly crash. The charge is a felony punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

Authorities say Olvera was intoxicated behind the wheel about 7:30 p.m. Monday when his 2001 Toyota pickup truck hit Aries Cobian 29, as she and her cousin pushed her broken-down car along East Lake Street near South Park Avenue in Streamwood.

A Hanover Park police officer who happened upon the scene helped remove the car from the intersection where it had stalled and into a nearby parking lot, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Gates. But one of the adults, who was eight months pregnant, was uncomfortable awaiting a tow in the parking lot. So Cobian and her cousin began pushing the vehicle back onto Lake Street toward Walnut in an effort to get to the cousin's home, Gates said.

Olvera's car struck Cobian, crushing her between his truck and her car, Gates said.

Cobian was "unresponsive in the roadway with massive injuries, substantial blood loss and no heartbeat," Gates said.

The Hanover Park resident and the mother of children ages 10 years, 8 years, 3 years and 5 months old was pronounced dead later Monday night at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.

Friend Kanaesha Wilson described Cobian as a wonderful person who lit up a room when she entered.

After the crash, Olvera was "seen on dash camera video entering his truck, removing two bottles and throwing them into a densely wooded area on the side of the road," Gates said. Police recovered one 750 ml bottle of vodka containing about 10 percent of a clear liquid, Gates said.

Olvera refused to take a breath test Monday night and the results of a blood test are pending, authorities said.

According to a prosecutor, Olvera previously faced a DUI charge in 2013. He ultimately received court supervision in that case.

Olvera is scheduled to return to court Nov. 1.

An autopsy Wednesday determined that Cobian died as a result of multiple blunt-force injuries, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A GoFundMe page had been set up at gofundme.com/aires-1-mom to help Cobian's children and assist with her funeral expenses.
