Police: Fleeing drunken driver from Schaumburg crashed into Hanover Park police car

This story has been updated to correctly describe the circumstances of the crash and the arrested person's reported blood-alcohol level.

A Schaumburg man charged with drunken driving is accused of striking a Hanover Park police car and three other vehicles Tuesday night as he fled from police, authorities said.

Hanover Park police officers were conducting a traffic stop involving another driver about 9:05 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said, when Kimani Unseld, 25, of the 1500 block of 1500 Revere Circle, crashed into an officer's squad car, reversed his vehicle and sped away - injuring an officer and striking three other vehicles in the process.

The officer was not seriously injured, authorities said.

Unseld then drove to a golf driving range, where he exited his vehicle and fled on foot, authorities said. Officers used a police dog to track and find Unseld a short time later, officials said.

Authorities reported that Unseld's blood alcohol concentration was .17. The legal threshold in Illinois is .08.

Unseld's charges include aggravated driving under the influence, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and aggravated assault on a community policing volunteer, private security or utility worker. His bond was set at $75,000.

"Mr. Unseld's alleged behavior not only demonstrates his complete disregard for safety of the general public but also his contempt for the rule of law," DuPage Count State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement Wednesday.

"His alleged attempts to flee from authorities and injuring an officer in the process will not be tolerated."

Unseld's next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 29.
