Des Plaines students raise money to fight cancer

North Elementary School held its annual "Walk Off for Cancer" Friday at the school, 1789 Rand Road, Des Plaines.

Students and staff walked around the school in return for donations, which will go to the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by the Chicago Cubs first baseman, who battled Hodgkin lymphoma. Its mission is to raise money for cancer research and to provide support to children and their families battling the disease.

Raffle prizes included a Rainforest Cafe gift basket, an autographed picture of Anthony Rizzo and a ride to school in a police car.

The event provides students with a sense of community and a reminds them how it feels to help those in need, teacher and organizer Jeff Lisy said.
