Prosecutors: Two people robbed man at gunpoint at Elk Grove motel

A 21-year-old parolee and a 19-year-old woman were charged with robbing a man at an Elk Grove Village motel at gunpoint.

Jamarrion King of Palatine, who was on parole for a 2014 armed robbery, was ordered held on $750,000 bail Thursday. Kyla Hunter of Willowbrook was ordered held on $200,000 bail.

Both were charged with armed robbery, a class X felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

According to prosecutors, the man who was robbed had made arrangements for a sexual encounter through a website. They said he arrived Monday at the motel parking lot in the 1000 block of West Devon Avenue, where he waited for a text with the room number. While waiting, he noticed a woman exit a car showing front-end damage, said Cook County assistant state's attorney Jennifer Gates.

He went to the room where he encountered Hunter, the same woman he saw stepping out of the car, Gates said. The man put two cellphones and his keys on a table and engaged in small talk with Hunter, Gates said. Hunter told the man she forgot something in her car and exited the room, Gates said. The man retrieved his phones and keys and put them back in his pocket, Gates said.

Moments later, King opened the door while pointing a gun at the man and demanded the phones and money, Gates said. When the man hesitated, King threatened him, Gates said, adding that King took the cellphones and $96 in cash and left.

Motel surveillance video shows the defendants near the man's room, Gates said.

When police arrested King and Hunter Tuesday at King's home, they noted a car with front-end damage matching the man's description. Police also recovered three cellphones from King and one from Hunter, officials said, and two cellphones in King's possession had serial numbers matching the man's missing cellphones.

According to prosecutors, King was sentenced to 7½ years in prison for a 2014 armed robbery in DuPage County.

He and Hunter next appear in court on Sept. 13.
