Lake Arlington grand reopening set for Saturday

Lake Arlington in Arlington Heights will host a grand reopening Saturday to mark the completion of a $1.3 million park upgrade project.

The park district will host the event from 10 a.m. to noon, with a ribbon cutting at 10:30 a.m., nature-themed crafts, fitness equipment demonstrations and free ice cream.

The district was facing an August deadline to complete the upgrades around the 50-acre detention lake, under terms of a state grant program that earmarked $400,000 for the project. The work was delayed in early 2015 when the grant was among $26 million in state park funds temporarily frozen by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The project includes a new shelter, playgrounds for ages 2 to 5 and ages 5 to 12, a fishing pier, boat dock extension, a wider biking/walking path and sensory garden.
