Gurnee man charged with car burglary

A Gurnee man is facing charges after police spotted several vehicles showing signs of having been burglarized early Friday morning, officials said.

John Schmidt, 33, has been charged with one count of burglary and also one county of identity theft from a July case, according to a news release from the Gurnee Police Department.

Officers were patrolling around 1:08 a.m. Friday on the 6100 block of Indian Trail Road when they found a vehicle that had been broken into and, as they investigated, found Schmidt near the scene, the release said. Schmidt had items with him and couldn't explain where he'd gotten them, police said, and officers learned he had recently been chased from a driveway in the jurisdiction of the Lake County sheriff's office.

Schmidt appeared in court later Friday, where his bond was set at $50,000. He's being held at the Lake County jail.
