Police: St. Charles man charged in Batavia stabbing

The Kane County Sheriff's Office arrested a St. Charles man Tuesday morning who is accused of stabbing another man Aug. 3 after an argument at a fast-food restaurant in Batavia, officials said.

Jose E. Santiago, 20, was charged with felony counts of armed violence, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, aggravated battery in a public place, and aggravated battery with the use of a deadly weapon.

According to Batavia police, Santiago and the man he eventually stabbed argued and fought at Steak n' Shake, 1901 McKee Street, just before 11 p.m. Aug. 3. After the two separated themselves, a woman driving Santiago's vehicle backed into the other man's vehicle and sped away.

As he was leaving the restaurant, the other man noticed he was being followed by what looked like Santiago's vehicle, police said. The other man told police he pulled over on the 0-99 block of Wiley Lane in Batavia to allow Santiago's vehicle to pass but, instead of passing, Santiago's vehicle pulled in front of the victim's vehicle and stopped.

Santiago and the other man got out of their cars and fought again; Santiago stabbed the man in the left shoulder and on the left side of his lower back, police said. After the victim threatened to call police, Santiago returned to his vehicle and fled, officials said.

Santiago was found and arrested around 10 a.m. Tuesday by Kane County sheriff's deputies. He is being held at the Kane County Adult Justice Center on $250,000 bail, according to the jail's website.
