Batavia police arrest man, 20, in home burglary

A 20-year-old Cortland man has been arrested and charged with an Aug. 2 burglary after Batavia police stopped a vehicle that matched a description from recent burglaries and later noticed a pedestrian running away.

Christian M. Corson, of the 100 block of East Lark Avenue, faces felony charges of armed violence, residential burglary and theft, all felonies, according to police and Kane County court records.

Armed violence is the most severe charge against Corson, carrying a punishment of six to 30 years in prison if convicted with no chance of probation. Records show Corson is accused of being armed with a knife while in the commission of another felony, in this case, a residential burglary.

According to Batavia police, officers stopped a suspicious vehicle on the 600 block of Kramer Court on Monday morning and noticed it was similar to a suspect vehicle in other suburban home burglaries.

Officers on the scene noticed Corson walking, then running away from them, police said. After a short chase, Corson was arrested on the 400 block of Webster Street, and police said they believe he was looking for area houses to burglarize, particularly those with open first-floor windows protected only by a screen.

Corson was charged with burglarizing a house on the 900 block of North Forest Avenue between 8:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Aug. 2 by cutting a screen on a first-floor window, police said.

Batavia Police Chief Dan Eul told the city council Monday night that felony charges have been authorized against a person who turned out to be Corson.

Batavia Police Cmdr. Eric Blowers said the driver of the vehicle, a 19-year-old woman from DeKalb, and an infant passenger were detained and later released without charges pending an investigation.

Corson is held at the Kane County jail on $150,000 bail, meaning he must post $15,000 to be released while the case is pending. He is next due in court Aug. 22. Corson, who is listed in court records as homeless, does not have any previous felony arrests in Kane County.
