Mundelein teen dies after being found unresponsive at Lollapalooza

An honor student from Mundelein died after being found unresponsive Sunday night at Lollapalooza, authorities said.

Evan Kitzmiller, 16, who was entering his junior year at Mundelein High School, was pronounced dead shortly before 9 p.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was taken from the music festival in Grant Park, authorities said.

A death investigation is continuing, police said. The results of an autopsy conducted by the Cook County medical examiner's office were still pending Monday afternoon.

In an emailed statement, Lollapalooza organizers offered condolences to Evan's family and friends.

"We are saddened to learn of the death of an individual who attended Lollapalooza on Sunday. The individual's family and loved ones are in our thoughts during this difficult time. We have no further information at this time," organizers said.

Evan was in critical condition due to a medical emergency when first responders took him to the hospital, according to the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications. The office did not provide further information, citing the ongoing investigation.

"The safety and security of festival attendees is our top priority," the office said in an email.

Evan's father, Andrew Kitzmiller, said his son had been enjoying all four days of the festival.

"He was having a great time," Kitzmiller told ABC 7. "He had worked very hard all summer at the car wash saving up his money, and this was the capstone to his summer vacation. So he was very enthusiastic and happy about being able to go."

Evan was an honor roll student and played basketball and baseball during his freshman year, and was on the sophomore football team last season, school officials said.

"We, as the Mundelein High School family, always come together and support each other in a time of need," school officials said in a statement. "Our deepest condolences to the Kitzmiller family."

Mundelein High School had counselors available at the school for any students in need of support. Students seeking support also can call the guidance office at (847) 949-2200, ext. 1262.
