Streamwood man admits to threatening school

A Streamwood man who last February posted Snapchat photos in which he appeared to make threats against area high schools pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct Monday and was sentenced to probation.

Kelly Iten, 20, pleaded guilty to transmitting a threat of violence against "persons at a school, school function or school event."

During a conference with Cook County Judge Steven J. Goebel and Iten's attorney, prosecutors say they requested prison time in exchange for Iten's guilty plea to the felony.

However, Goebel sentenced him to two years of probation and ordered him to pay $664 in fines. Goebel further ordered Iten undergo a mental health evaluation, refrain from using social media and have no contact with any school.

During Iten's February bond hearing, prosecutors said the then 19-year-old posted a photo showing him holding what appeared to be an assault rifle with a caption that included the statements: "What school is first! Here's to a good time!"

Prosecutors said students at Streamwood High School, where Iten had been expelled, were concerned that he might follow through on the threats.

The weapon turned out to be an Airsoft replica, prosecutors said.
