Unresponsive girl, 6, rescued from water in Crystal Lake

A 6-year-old girl rescued by onlookers from the open water at Three Oaks Recreation Area in Crystal Lake is stable at an area hospital, police said.

Witnesses found the girl face down in the water and unresponsive, police said. They pulled her out and immediately began performing CPR with help from a lifeguard until paramedics arrived at about 12:51 p.m.

Paramedics provided advanced life support treatment and took the girl by ambulance to Centegra Hospital-Huntley. She later was flown to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where she is stable, police said.

"She is breathing with a heartbeat," Crystal Lake Police Deputy Chief Tom Kotlowski said.

The city-owned beach, at 5517 Northwest Hwy., was closed for the remainder of the day as police investigated, interviewing witnesses and lifeguards.
