Schaumburg health club lifeguard saves toddler from drowning

An initial version of this story reported the child as being three years old. Authorities have since revised reports to state the child is two.

A lifeguard saved a 2-year-old boy from drowning at a Schaumburg health club pool Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Police Lt. Shawn Green said the guard at Life Time Fitness, 900 E. Higgins Road, jumped into the pool when he saw the boy face down in the water. Green said the guard pulled the boy from the water, performed CPR and revived him within a minute of Schaumburg paramedics and police arriving to the club.

"Apparently, the (2-year-old's) mom was supervising several children at the time, briefly lost track of the boy ... and he left her view," Green said of how the child wound up in the pool.

Schaumburg Fire Department Capt. Mark Nelson said authorities were dispatched to Life Time at 5:09 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a possible drowning. Nelson said the boy was awake and breathing when paramedics arrived.

The child was in stable condition when he was brought to Amita Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, Nelson added. Green said "all seems fine" for the boy.

Amy Williams, a spokeswoman at Life Time's corporate headquarters in Minnesota, declined to provide additional information "out of respect for the privacy of the family and our team member."
