Driver charged in Elk Grove Village crash that killed Bloomingdale man

A Hillside man has been charged after a six-vehicle pileup in Elk Grove Village that killed a Bloomingdale man and injured a dozen others.

Caleb Rallings, 20, is charged with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence of drugs involving a death. He was booked into Cook County jail on Tuesday and held without bail, according to records. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Rallings was driving a 2015 Ford F150 pickup truck north on Arlington Heights Road about 10:45 a.m. June 30 when he struck five vehicles that were stopped or slowing while turning northeast onto Cosman Road, police said.

The collisions led to the death of Giuseppe Gazzano, 44, of Bloomingdale when his 2013 Chevrolet Equinox was struck by a dump truck, authorities said. Twelve others were injured, police said Tuesday.

Deputy Chief Nick Olson declined to say how fast Rallings was driving at the time of the collision.

A maintenance vehicle for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County was one of the vehicles involved in the crash. Its five occupants were among those taken to the hospital.
