Churros Y Chocolate serves up Mexican-style treats

Everyone always raved about the churros at Vicky and Vince Ortiz' Mexican fast food restaurant.

Vince had the dream of one day opening up his own churro shop featuring the fried goodies.

This year, that dream became a reality.

Vince, along with Vicky, and their brother and sister-in-law, Valentine Ramos and Yazmin Hernandez, recently opened Churros Y Chocolate along the Randall Road corridor in Algonquin, 2533 W. Algonquin Road. The shop is just west of Randall Road in a former pizza shop around the corner from Butera.

"We looked around and found this place, and this is just his dream," Vicky Ortiz said of her husband, Vince. "He always wanted a place to sell the amazing churros he makes."

For their grand opening in March, the family did a lot of remodeling on the inside of the business to make it inviting for customers to come in and try their creations.

All of the sweet treats are made right inside the business. There are a variety of flavors. One of their specialties is a fruit churro, which is an open-faced churro filled with vanilla filling and then topped with your choice of flavors such as strawberries and drizzled with chocolate.

Churros Y Chocolate also serves up a variety of flavors of churros, including vanilla, strawberry, dulce de leche and more, Vicky Ortiz said.

The family started making churros for their restaurants, El Famous Burrito, in Mount Prospect and Chicago.

They were very popular, and soon they started expanding their churro business.

They also make churros, freeze them and sell them wholesale to other businesses.

The family also brings their churros on the road. They will be serving them up at the Lake in the Hills Ribfest this month, and monthly at the flea market in Rosemont.

No matter where they are, the sweet treats are popular, Vicky Ortiz said.

While she said they offer great customer service and an inviting atmosphere at the new Churros Y Chocolate, it is the food that keeps bringing the people back.

"We try to be nice to people and know everyone, but they love those churros." she said. "It's been popular."

Songs of summer:
