Lake County chief judge issues alert of jury scam

Lake County Chief Judge Jay Ukena Friday issued an alert of a scam where several people were called Thursday by a man pretending to be a Lake County sheriff's deputy saying they have failed to appear for jury duty and telling them to drive to the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan immediately. Once at the courthouse, they were instructed to call the deputy sheriff.

"Our office does not contact any potential juror by telephone," Jury Commissioner Robert A. Zastany Jr. said in the news release. "All communication by our office is sent via U.S. mail on official circuit letterhead."

Officials said while at least five people have reported being contacted, only one showed up at the jury commission offices, but never called the fake deputy back. The Lake County sheriff, Vernon Hills and Libertyville police departments are investigating the complaints. Authorities believe the scammers are trying to burglarize the homes of their victims.

If you receive a call regarding jury service, the release advises that you don't give out personal information, don't reveal when you will leave your residence, document the number calling, and notify police. People can verify their jury summons by calling (847) 377- 4600 or by email at jury@lakecountyil.gov.
