Elmhurst police stop seeking possibly handcuffed suspect who escaped

Elmhurst police were looking in the city for a retail theft suspect who "escaped police custody" Wednesday night but stopped the search because they believed he was "no longer in the immediate vicinity."

The search was first announced in an emergency alert at 7:24 p.m., which said the suspect "may be handcuffed." They said they were searching the area of North and Larch avenues.

The alert was updated at 9:44 p.m. with news the search was halted.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic man, 38 years old, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, and 180 pounds, wearing a yellow shirt and red pants.

The police did not say how the suspect escaped.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police at (630) 530-3050.
