Two people injured, one critically, in head-on crash in Hampshire

Two people were injured, one critically, in a head-on crash Friday afternoon in Hampshire, fire officials said.

Crews from the Hampshire Fire Protection District responded about 12:45 p.m. to the two-vehicle collision with "heavy damage" on Melms Road west of Harmony Road, Deputy Chief Trevor Herrmann said in a statement Sunday.

One person was extricated from a vehicle and flown with critical injuries to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, he said. A second person was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin with injuries that were not life threatening.

Information about the circumstances of the crash and the patients' conditions were not immediately available Sunday.

An investigation is ongoing by the Kane County Sheriff's Office.
