Officials: Naperville fire started on coach house balcony

Two residents and four police officers were treated for smoke inhalation Sunday at the scene of a Naperville coach house fire, authorities said.

A resident called 911 about 5:28 p.m. to report a fire at her home in the 200 block of West Benton Street, according to the Naperville Fire Department. Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the second-floor balcony of the coach house, which is attached to the single-family residence.

Authorities determined the blaze started on the coach house balcony and spread to the second-floor living area and attic space, fire officials said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

One resident was able to safely evacuate, and a second person had to be helped out of the house by Naperville police, officials said. Both occupants and the four officers treated for smoke inhalation were released at the scene.

The fire was extinguished in about an hour. Despite the damage to the coach house, no residents were displaced because the main residence is still habitable, officials said.

Meanwhile, assisting fire agencies responded to an appliance fire at a Naperville apartment building in the 700 block of Greenwood Circle, officials said. Crews were able to extinguish the burning appliance with minimal damage, and the unit remained habitable.
