South Barrington fire possibly caused by fish-tank pump

Fire officials are investigating the cause of a Saturday morning house fire in South Barrington that may have been sparked by a water pump in a built-in fish tank.

Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District was called at about 9:15 a.m. Saturday. The only sign of fire upon arrival was a faint odor of smoke outside. But heavy smoke was visible once firefighters forced their way in through the garage service door.

The fire was controlled in about 15 minutes using 325 gallons of water and a gallon of foam.

An investigation continues to confirm a cause of the fire and determine an estimate of damage costs.

Firefighters from Barrington, Cary, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Fox River Grove, Long Grove and Hoffman Estates along with South Barrington police assisted at the scene of the fire.
