Runners raise money in Geneva to help Haitians

People could walk or run while raising money for children in Haiti to go to school during the 7th Hope For Haitians 5K Saturday at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva.

Since 2001, Hope for Haitians has worked to bring clean water, food, housing, education and medical services to Haiti, home to more than 9 million people and considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

While helping to meet the basic needs of Haitians for housing and clean water, Hope for Haitians also creates sustainable solutions for continued self-sufficiency and provides education programs to prepare the next generation.

According to HopeForHaitians.org, it costs $150 for one student to attend school for a year. Since the organization started it has established clean water sources for more than 270,000 people and built more than 600 homes in 15 communities. It has also started reforestation projects and built community centers.
