Elgin police mum about double-fatal shooting

Elgin police say they are questioning two "persons of interest" in the fatal shooting of two men at an apartment parking lot Sunday afternoon.

One person of interest was familiar with the victims, police spokeswoman Kristie Hilton said Monday.

Authorities released scant details about the daylight shooting in which at least one of the victims was shot in the head from close range.

"Detectives are working diligently on this case, compiling statements and evidence," Deputy Chief Bill Wolf said. "Preliminary information indicates that the victims and offenders were in close proximity to one another in the apartment parking lot when the shooting occurred. As the investigation continues, we will provide our community with additional information."

Officers responded about 2:08 p.m. to the 0-100 block of Longwood Places to find two people with gunshot wounds, police said.

Neither of the victims - identified as Mark McDaniel, 26, and Raymond Dyson, 29, both of Elgin - lived at the Garden Quarter Apartments, west of Wing Park, where the shooting occurred, police said.

McDaniel was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, then transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Dyson was taken to Presence St. Joseph's Hospital in Elgin before being transferred to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Both men were pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

Dyson died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Cook County medical examiner's report.

Though an autopsy was conducted Monday on McDaniel, the DuPage County coroner's office would not release details of his wounds.

Garden Quarter Apartments management declined to comment because the shooting is under investigation. Police officers were at the scene Monday afternoon investigating.

Several residents also refused to talk, saying they were concerned for their safety, though police have said there is no danger to the public.

A resident who asked to remain anonymous said she has lived in the apartment complex for seven years and was in her unit Sunday when she heard fire and police sirens. She went outside, expecting to see a bonfire out of control, when her neighbor told her there had been a shooting in the parking lot.

To her knowledge, this is the first shooting at the apartments since she moved in. "And it was in broad daylight," she said.
