St. Charles man shot by cops charged with assault

A St. Charles man, who was shot by police during a confrontation Thursday afternoon, has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Christopher C. Kemble Jr., 19, of the 3400 block of Voltaire Lane, also is charged with one count each of reckless conduct and disorderly conduct-filing a false police report, according to a news release from St. Charles police.

Kemble is hospitalized in stable condition, police said, and will be arrested after he is released.

"This is an unfortunate and isolated incident. We are supporting our officers through this difficult time, and we sympathize with the Kemble family during this tragic event," Deputy Chief Erik Mahan said in the news release.

Mahan said Kemble told friends earlier in the day that he had a gun and intended to kill himself or force police to kill him. A neighbor told the Daily Herald that Kemble had posted Snapchats expressing those same views.

At 12:05 p.m. Thursday, Kemble called 911 saying there was an armed intruder in his home. When police arrived, Kemble was outside, running toward a nearby park. When officers surrounded him, he pointed a gun at them, Mahan said, and officers shot him.

Illinois State Police continue to investigate the shooting. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.

Police would not say what kind of gun Kemble had, or how he obtained it.

The news release also included contact information for suicidepreventionlifeline.org at (800) 273-8255 and spsamerica.org.
