2nd man guilty of attempted murder in 2012 Elgin home invasion

An Elgin man was convicted Thursday of attempted murder and home invasion from a 2012 attack in Elgin and now faces up to 30 years in prison.

Jaime Zarate, 32, was found guilty of two counts of attempted murder and two counts of home invasion.

Kane County Judge Clint Hull will sentence Zarate, who was on parole for a 2006 attempted murder conviction, on June 7.

Two people were badly beaten in the attack, prosecutors said.

During a trial this week, prosecutors presented evidence that Zarate and co-defendant Modesto Rosales, 30, also of Elgin, kicked in the front door of a residence on the 400 block of Raymond Street about 3:20 a.m. on June 23, 2012.

The pair used their fists, a clothes iron, computer monitor and a chair to beat the two victims, who suffered deep cuts to their faces, necks, heads and arms, along with broken teeth.

The victims were Rosales' former girlfriend and her new boyfriend; prosecutors said the young son of Rosales and his ex-girlfriend witnessed part of the beating.

Zarate had been free on $50,000 bail that was revoked after the jury's verdict.

Rosales pleaded guilty in December 2013 to home invasion and aggravated battery and was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
