Police: Two Grayslake-area men hospitalized after BB gun vs. knife fight

Lake County sheriff's detectives are investigating a bizarre fight between two men Sunday night on Route 45 near Grayslake.

The combatants, a 30-year-old who had a BB gun and a 40-year-old armed with a knife, were both hospitalized, albeit in different states.

No charges have been filed and the fight is under investigation, authorities said. Police have not released the identities of the men, who are from unincorporated Lake County near Grayslake.

Sgt. Sara Balmes said investigators have no evidence to suggest shots were fired during the fight, but believe the man with the BB gun used it to strike the man with the knife.

Sheriff's deputies learned of the fight from a 911 call made by a witness, and arrived on the scene in the 34000 block of N. Route 45 around 11 p.m. By then, both men had left. At the scene, they found fragments of the BB gun, Balmes said.

While deputies were on scene, the man with the knife called 911 to report the fight and request medical attention. He had walked about 1.5 miles to his residence on the 33000 block of Lone Rock before calling authorities.

He was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with lacerations to his forehead and ear and a puncture wound to his right calf. He was treated and released, authorities said.

Balmes said the man with the BB gun ended up in a Milwaukee hospital and was recovering Thursday from three stab wounds to his abdomen and lower back.

After the fight, he was driving through Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, where he was stopped by police on a traffic violation. The man was rushed to St. Catherine's Hospital in Pleasant Prairie and was later transferred to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.
