Palatine man accused of stealing from cars

Palatine police say a man seen trying to enter vehicles in a parking lot has been charged with burglary.

Denzel Thompson, 18, of the 1100 block of East Cunningham Drive in Palatine, faces felony charges of burglary and unlawful possession of a debit card stemming from his April 9 arrest.

Police said officers were called about 4 p.m. that day to the 1900 block of North Capri Drive on a report of a suspicious-looking person lifting door handles on several parked vehicles and attempting to gain entry. An officer arrived within minutes to find a man matching a description provided by a resident who summoned police to Capri Drive.

It then was determined the man who turned out to be Thompson was wanted on a warrant for failing to appear in court for a past burglary arrest, according to police.

While in custody at Palatine police headquarters, authorities said, a wallet and debit card in Thompson's possession were traced to a victim whose car had been burglarized in the neighborhood where the suspect was located.

Thompson is scheduled to appear in court May 5.
