West Chicago man charged in crash involving St. Charles police car

Authorities say a West Chicago man caused a Tuesday night crash involving a St. Charles police car with its emergency lights activated.

Eugenio Hernandez, 38, was charged with driving with a suspended/revoked license, failing to yield while turning left at an intersection and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, according to a St. Charles news release.

An on-duty police officer turned on his squad car's emergency lights about 11 p.m. after noticing a vehicle speeding north on Kirk Road. The Ford Explorer driven by Hernandez turned in front of the police car as it was driving through the Ohio Avenue intersection, causing them to collide, officials said.

The officer and Hernandez were taken to Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva with injuries that were not life-threatening. They have been released.

Illinois State Police investigated the crash with help from St. Charles police.
