No one injured in small fire at Woodland Elementary East

No children were injured after a small fire ignited in a washroom trash can Tuesday morning at Woodland Elementary East School, authorities said.

Battalion Chief Bob Heraver of the Gurnee Fire Department said firefighters were called to the school on the 17000 block of West Gages Lake Road at 8:39 a.m. after a teacher found a trash can on fire and pulled the fire alarm.

The fire was extinguished and smoldering by the time firefighters arrived, Heraver said.

Woodland District 50 spokeswoman Carolyn Waller said no children were in danger and all students were able to evacuate the building safely.

She said the fire remains under investigation by the Lake County sheriff's office and the Gurnee Fire Department.

The elementary building serves children in grades first through third grade.
