Chicago man charged with stealing unlocked car from Hinsdale house

A 26-year-old Chicago man faces a felony charge in connection with the February theft of two cars from the driveway and garage of a Hinsdale house.

Yarmel Williams, of the 7500 block of South Morgan, is accused of stealing one of the vehicles, authorities said Thursday. He has been charged with one count of unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

On Feb. 22, the vehicle owner contacted Hinsdale police to report his cars had been stolen - one from the garage and the other from the driveway.

Authorities said Williams was seen entering one of the stolen cars in a Burr Ridge parking lot Wednesday and was taken into custody.

Hinsdale police Chief Brian King said the arrest helps represent a pattern of thefts and burglaries that occur during the overnight hours involving unlocked cars where key fobs have been left in the vehicles.

He asked residents to lock their cars and secure their keys.

Williams appeared in bond court Thursday morning. His bail was set at $30,000, meaning he would have to pay $3,000 to be released.

His next court date in DuPage County is scheduled for May 2.

Meanwhile, police are continuing to investigate the theft of the second car. Anyone with information is asked to call (630) 789-7070.
